Matthew Lubin

Matthew Lubin is a proud Jersey native who attempts to teach English to
children in Shenzhen, China. He speaks Chinese poorly.

Spring Festival in Shanghai, Year of the Dog, and I eat breakfast outside the subway station

 I wait

outside Jing An Temple—

sunny and warm,

late-January.

A beggar sits between

the temple and me.

He plays an er hu—

accompanied by

the flowing fountain;

his song sounds like blues.

Passersby drop change

into the beggar’s bowl,

on their way

through the capitalist wealth

surrounding us

in the communism

along Nan Jing Lu.
