When an author grants a journal or magazine (i.e., a periodical) First Serial Rights to a work, the periodical acquires the right to be the first publisher of the work for the current issue, and no other journal is allowed to publish that same work during that period (currently, 1 year in the case of The Aroostook Review). Afterward, an author, as holder of the copyright, is free to submit the work elsewhere.
First Electronic Rights are the rights of a periodical to be the first one to publish a work online. This is similar to the First Serial Rights.
The Aroostook Review will keep your piece on file and accessible by visitors to that site for a period of time after its original publication. The Aroostook Review currently archives issues online for 5 years. However, authors and artists may publish their works elsewhere once the First Serial and First Electronic Rights expire at the time the issue in which their work appears is archived.
